Family Matters

We have been forced to spend a lot of time with our families these last few weeks, and it seems that will continue for a while. I want to remind all of us that God wants us to get along with our family.

Of course the Bible has guidance for both children and parents.

Colossians 3:20-21

Children, obey your parents in every thing, for this pleases the Lord. Fathers (and mothers), do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.

Ephesians 6:1-4

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. "Honor your father and mother" - which is the first commandment with a promise - "that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth." Fathers (and mothers), do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. Living in a family can be hard work; we love them, but sometimes we get upset with them; it happens to all of us. If we take the time to remember the kind of people God wants us to be, things can be easier. If you are feeling angry or frustrated, here are a few things you can try:

  • Do a quiet activity on your own

  • Exercise

  • Breath in for the count of 3 and out for the count of 6 until you feel calmer

Find some ways this week to make your family life easier . . . you might even have some fun!
