One of the most important traits for a martial artist is Indomitable Spirit. Those are big words, and it is a big idea. So what, exactly, does it mean?
First, let's look at some dictionary definitions.
Indomitable
impossible to subdue or defeat
Spirit
the non-physical part of a person regarded as their true self
the main quality or attitude of a person
the quality of courage, energy and determination
Oxford Dictionary of English
Being a martial artist doesn't make you invincible. However, being a martial artist develops the strength of mind and the self-control to face difficulties in such a way that you are not defeated by them. As a martial artist, you continually build an attitude of courage, energy and determination within yourself.
Bad things will happen; it is how you respond to them that matters. You need to look at hard things and say "You can't beat me." That doesn't mean you will win every fight; that means that even if you lose, you pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and keep fighting.
For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love, and of self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7 (NIV)
